black lives matter

In 2020, supporters of Black Lives Matter held peaceful marches in Japan, most notably in Tokyo and Osaka. BLM is a global political and social movement against the systemic racism black people continue to be affected by, which is perhaps most pronounced in the United States. It does not argue that black lives matter more than those of other races, but rather black people and their civil liberties must be valued equally to those of other ethic groups. Spurred on by well-documented and repeated acts of injustice perpetrated by US police, BLM continues the fight for equality.

This selection of photographs was taken at a BLM march in Shibuya, Tokyo on June 14. It features supplementary photos taken at a march against police brutality on June 6, also in Shibuya, which supporters of BLM also attended.
